Veneto
Veneto is a region of Italy in the north east part of the country. It has a population of about 4.8 million.
The capital is Venice and the area was formerly known as the Venetian Republic but was annexed to Italy in 1866 during the Risorgimento.
Agriculture
Agriculture is important to the region with specialist crops such as fruit, vines and market gardening which all require intensive labour input and are not suited to mass farming. On the fringes of the region there is more crop growing and mechanisation. The main products of the region include maize, vegetables, fruit (apples, cherries), tobacco and hemp.
Veneto is an important wine region producing more bottles of DOC wines than any other region of Italy. It produces some popular wines such as Prosecco and Soave amongst others. The Amarone della Valpolicella produced in the hills around Verona is some of the best red in the world.
