The President of the Republic is the head of state representing the country.

The President is elected by partliament and the office is held for 7 years. Duties include calling for parliamentary elections, commanding the military, declaring a state of war and suchlike. The position, however, is largely ceremonial and the duties of the president are usually carried out by the prime minister.

In order to become president a person must be at least 50, an Italian citizen and not barred from holding public office. The president is elected by parliament.
