Striscia la notizia
The name of the show means something like "strip the news". Striscia is the strip or ticker which runs across the bottom of the screen during broadcasts and although there is an underlying seriousness, the show is presented in a lighthearted way with dancing girls and ostensibly silly stunts. The show began in 1987 and was the brainchild of Enzio Greggio and Gianfranco D'Angelo. It is produced by Antonio Ricci.
Format
The show usually begins with two scantily clad girls - Veline - dancing across the desks of the presenters. The two presenters (who change periodically during the season) focus on political satire then social satire such as waste of public services. There are filmed reports and interviews also.
The two main presenters are Greggio and Enzo Iacchetti however over the years many others have taken the role, often comedians or actors. Over the years there have been three female presenters: Alba Parietti in 1994, Anna Maria Barbera in 2003 and since 2004, Michelle Hunziker.
Also in the show is the Gabibbo, a mascot in a costume who began as a provocative character but who now, in the manner of a Genoese working man, takes the causes of everyday people to defend them. In the past the Gabbibo went out to report on issues but over the years many other reporters have investigated corruption, scams and frauds on behalf of the show.
A number of segments of the show have been used as spin-off shows. The most recent is Le nuove mostre.
