Silvana Mangano
Silvana Mangano (21st April 1930, notableIn::Rome – 16th December 1989, Spain; 59 years old) was an Italian profession::actress.
Mangano was born to an Italian father (Amedeo Mangano, a train conductor) and English mother, Ivy Webb{{#set:nationality=Anglo-Italian}}. She lived in Rome during the Second World War and following this trained as a dancer for several years whilst also supporting herself as a model.
In 1946, at age 16, she won the Miss Rome beauty contest and from this she was given a role in a Mario Costa movie. The following year she took part in the Miss Italia contest, famous for producing a number of film stars. Around this time she had an affair with Marcello Mastroianni which helped her secure her first film contract.
Mangano's big break came when she was cast in Riso amaro in 1949 by Giuseppe de Santis. This led to her signing a contract with Lux Films.
The producer on the film was Dino De Laurentis whom she later married. He also acted as her manager and effectively controlled her career. Following Riso amaro she appeared in a number of films in both Italy and America although they never achieved the same level of popularity as Managano herself did not with her contemporaries, Sophia Loren and Gina Lollobrigida.
In 1981 her son Federico De Laurentis died in a plane crash and Mangano gave up filming, only to appear briefly twice more before her death.
In 1983 they seperated and Mangano went to live in Paris and Madrid where she made tapestries. She filed for divorce but the proceedings were not complete when she died of lung cancer.
