Sicily

From The Italy Wiki
Jump to: navigation, search

Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. It is also an autonomous region which comprises the island of Sicily and those smaller islands around it such as the Aeolian Islands.

In all, the population of Sicily is about 5 million. The capital is Palermo and the island itself is separated from Calabria on mainland Italy by the 5km long Straits of Messina which is about 3km wide at the north and 16km wide at the south of the straits.

It can get very hot during the summer but remains pleasant during winter.

History

Sicily has a long history of foreign domination, from the Greeks to the Romans, Arabs, Normans and Catalans. The result is a mixed culture where every single domination left something to see, to taste, to hear.

Over the years the island has been associated strongly with the Mafia.
