Religion has always been an integral part of Italian society. The country today is the seat of the Catholic Church which is the world's largest church body but the country is also host to an increasing number of immigrants bringing new religions with them. However, many other religions have been practiced (and are continued to be practiced) in Italy for many hundreds of years.


Religious Groups

The following summarises the various religious groups in Italy today.

  • Christianity - has been practiced in Italy for some 2,000 years. Over 90% of the population are Christian with by far the majority being Catholic.
  • Islam - almost 2% of the population are Muslim.

Other groups, each with less than 0.5% of the population are:

Atheists comprise about 6% of the population.
