Early Life
Mastroianni grew up in Turin and Rome. During World War II he was interned in a PoW camp but escaped to Venice.
In 1948 Mastroianni received his first film role (other than as an extra) in I Miserabili. From then on he went from strength to strength, soon moving international. He is famously known for starring opposite Sophia Loren with whom he worked on 10 films in all.
Personal Life
Mastroianni was married to actress Flora Carabella in 1948 until his death in 1996. They had one child, Barbara. He also had a daughter, Chiara Mastroianni, with French actress and his long time lover in the 70s, Catherine Deneuve.
He had one brother, Ruggero Mastoianni, who was a film editor.
Death
At his bedside when he died were both his daughters, his former lover, Catherine Deneuve and his partner at the time, Anna Maria Tatò. Following his death the Trevi Fountain in Rome was turned off and draped in black.
Since 1998 the Marcello Mastroianni Award is given to the best newcomer actor or actress at the Venice Film Festival.
