Lamberto Maggiorani (28th August 1909, Rome – 22nd April 1983 aged 73) was an Italian actor notable for his portrayal of Antonio Ricci in Ladri di biciclette (Bicycle Thieves).
Maggiorani was not a trained actor but a factory worker. He heard about the auditions for Ladri di biciclette and took his son along for them. However, he was chosen as the lead character by director Vittorio De Sica.
Following the film Maggiorani returned to work only to be laid off shortly afterwards due to lack of work. Following this he returned to acting full time although it never reached the same height as it had done following his first film.
