Il Ponte del Diavolo - the Devil's Bridge - spans the Natisone river and joins the two halves of Cividale del Friuli.

Legend

The story is well known in Friuli.

Over the years many people had tried to build a bridge to link the two halves of the town but it had proved impossible. To solve the problem, the townsfolk asked the Devil for help. The Devil accepted but in payment he wanted the soul of the first person to cross the bridge. That night, the Devil's mother placed a big rock right in the middle of the river. The Devil sat on the rock and he stretched his antlers to create the arches of the bridge.

The following day he waited in vain for the first person to go across the bridge. Nobody wanted to pay him and everyone avoided the bridge. Then suddenly some children playing with a dog chased it towards the bridge. The dog got frightened and crossed the bridge and the Devil had to be satisfied with the soul of a dog.
