History

Traces of the first settlement in this area have been dated back to the Neolithic period.

The name derives from Karallai , a name the Nuragi people gave it.

The city was colonized by the Phoenicians and occupied by the Carthaginians. In 48 BCE the Romans made it one of their municipia.

Ruled by the Spaniards for almost 3 centuries Cagliari became part of the Regno Sabaudo in 1720, and it was later annexed to the Kingdom of Italy.

In 1626 the University of Cagliari was founded. This event contributed to enhancing the role of the city throughout the region.
