History

Bari was noted early on for its harbour (first appearing in official documents in 181 BCE) and as a centre for fishing. As with most other towns in Italy, it changed hands numerous times during its history. First part of the Roman Empire then Byzantine Empire. Later the Normans in the Middle Ages and then the Lombards, eventually becaming part of the Kingdom of Naples when it was developed into the most important sea port in the area.

During the Second World War the city became famous as the only European city to suffer from chemical warfare. The Allies had liberated the city in September 1943. A couple of months later, a German air raid on ships in the harbour hit a store of mustard gas which aboard the American ship, John Harvey which sank. The gas spread over the city but due to the secret nature of the supplies on the ship, doctors were not told about the nature of the gas and could not treat its effects properly.

During the late 1960s and 1970s chaotic residential development took place in the city with further expansion during the 1990s.
